I was taken for a ride in an ultralight aeroplane one day. I had my Phase One camera with me at the time. I don’t like heights, my fingers were frozen from the cold and the only way to get a good shot was to hang out the side with my camera parallel to the ground. It was dangerous and terrifying but . . . My Limited Edition Art collection began.

Near the mouth of the South Alligator this floodplain image has a mixture of a number of elements. It was the combination and composition that caused me to fly around it a couple of times. It reminded me of something but I couldn’t work out what. Once it was printed someone said it looked like an 18th century map and the name stuck.
Captured on the Phase One 100mp system.

Random patterns in the floodplains that remind us of something. This is one typical such image. Captured near the Wildman river system it is a small part of a large floodplain system but interesting. Water draining back into the main rover always creates interesting patterns and textures.

Obviously named this particular tree caught my attention. It was a tricky shot and I had to fly around a few times to get the tree in the right spot in the frame. When shooting this style, it doesn’t take much to be out of line and change the composition of the image. After a few laps I finally had the tree where I wanted it. The sting ray holes make an interesting addition of detail to the story. Flying over the area in general is magic because the water is alive with sting rays, turtles and sharks that can be easily seen from a few thousand feet.

Straight Lines

An interesting perspective of a working farm out in Noonamah. Flying over head the perfectly straight lines and contrast of colour certainly caught my eye. The patterns are almost hypnotising. From here the tractor hard at work looks like a toy. Amazing what a different perspective can have.

Blue Hole
Release date: 01/08/2017

There are only 2 elements in this image – water and coral. A naturally formed hole in the reef north of Dundee Beach near Bare Sand Island. What caught my eye was the long tail coming out the hole as the outgoing tide went through. The small white breaking wave gives an indication of how shallow the main water body is. We flew around this hole a number of times to get the right composition and story.

Relief
Release date: 07/07/2017

The floodplains offer little relief from the often intense top end sun. Cattle favourite refuge is always obvious from the air as the tracks in and out are quite defined. This image was captured near Cape Hotham between the Adelaide and South Alligator Rivers at about 1500 feet. Captured on the Phase One 100mp system.

The South Alligator River is the longest river in the southern hemisphere that is fully contained within a national park. And from the air it is impressive. I could see there was an image when we were flying over this area but it wasn’t quite right. Climbing to 5000 feet in an ultra-light is not for the faint hearted plus its very cold especially in just a shirt and when the climb is very slow because of the lack of lift for the ultra-light. When we got to the height I could finally see what I was chasing.

Pathways
Release date: 20/07/2017
No of Prints: 10
A busy area of a tidal flat along the Wildman River as cattle and feral animals travel from higher ground into the wetter areas of the floodplain. It’s interesting to check out the tracks and the actual depth because often single tracks are deeper than the pathways that have been more frequently traveled. The tide lines are natures pathways.

Turtle Tracks
Release date: 07/07/2017

Turtles are awesome. When I was flying low along the beach I could see half a dozen turtles in the shallows waiting for the tide to rise. The sting rays, turtles, sharks and sea life in around the islands north of Darwin is amazing to see. Sometimes I would get distracted from the photography as I tried to work all the dark shapes moving around the water ways. This particular image is a timing capture because if you go to early in the season there aren’t enough tracks and if you go too late the tracks are covered with foot prints from visitors. I had a couple of passes over this area to get the right balance between all the elements in the image.

Bynoe Harbour somewhere between 100 and 2000 feet during the dry season when the waters are clean and pure. I was trasitting in the ultra-light to another area but always watch for potential images. This area always amazes me with the ocean life. It is always alive with shapes moving in the water which sometimes are desernable depending on their depth and my height but sting rays, sharks and turtles are prolific. I chose this image due to its simplicity of the reef running down into the deeper sandy bottom of the harbour. If you look closely you can see a few waves breaking on the coral which indicates how shallow the reef is.

A moment of opportunity. We were coming into land and would have been at about 200 feet over Noonamah when we flew over this area of tracks. Its more like a macro image from the air and is typical of the view a drone image produces from these lower heights but I found it an interesting perspective.
Captured on the Phase One 100mp system.

Flow
Release date: 01/08/2017

Nothing but water in the Adelaide River. I was flying somewhere between 500 and 1000 feet when I could see a boiling action on the river. A closer inspection was required so down we went down for a closer look. Fresh water was boiling up through the muddy water in the river and creating an interesting pattern. It took a couple of runs over it but I settled on this capture.
Captured on the Phase One 100mp system.
